Introducing the must-have software for a VJ. It has to be said that being a VJ may not carry with it the mainstream cache of being a DJ. However, at Mac Rental Company we are here to let you in on a rather big secret – we think that being a VJ might, maybe, be even cooler than being a DJ. Sure, a DJ gets to create music, but a VJ…or at least a good one, has the ability to use the latest technology to create images. This allows for swirling, brilliant cacophonies of colour that can be used to create pieces that can be incorporated into concerts, nightclubs and music festivals. Utterly versatile and achingly accessible, VJing does not get enough credit in our opinion. Happily, at Mac Rental Company we work with a number of VJs who use the fantastic facilities available on a MacBook to support their art show. So we had a quick chat with some of our fantastic customers and got to grips with the must-have software for any VJ to be used on a Mac.

VJamm

Designed by renowned and impressive company Camart, VJamm is described as a “piano for sound and vision.” And this professional version really is extremely impressive, coming with a number of advanced features including support for higher resolution clips, support for more file types and better media import methods. Not only that, but VJamm is thought to have one of the most accurate time bases, making it fantastic for professional presentations – clip stretching as well as other clip calisthenics.

Resolume

Available on a Mac, Resolume is a phenomenal investment for a passionate VJ. With the ability to play Flash animations including AS2 and AS3 scripting and the capacity to support a number of external video streams, this easy user interface allows VJs to work on fewer layers whilst having far more video streams.

Modul8

Available only on the Mac (well do you even need another computer?), the Modul8 boasts a large preview screen as well as a fairly big set of controls alongside the large left pane. It also allows you to adjust each layer individually and in real time, including the filters, whilst the rendering machine is optimised to run extremely quickly – which is a plus for any VJ live streaming images during an exhibition.

Salvation

This unique processing and visual programming tool allows you to mix and manipulate as many video layers and effects as your hardware will allow. Coming with a GLSL pixel programming interface that can be used with a host of phenomenal effects alongside a numerous layers and manipulation, it allows for endless creativity – a must-have for any VJ armed with a Mac.

XNTH

Last, but by no means least – this slightly oddly named programme allows VJs to generate real time video graphics – a reasonably priced option for professionals and enthusiasts alike.
