Apple’s special event 2017 held their first ever event at the Steve Jobs Theatre in California on Tuesday and boy did it not disappoint. 10 years in the making with months of anticipation building up, the event was set to be explosive and Tuesday saw thousands of people stare at their iPhones for reasons apart from playing Candy Crush……but to find out what on earth Apple has planned.
Quite possibly the pinnacle of the event, this is what everyone was waiting for – the iPhone X, the 10th anniversary device. And there was a whole host of exciting features to keep even the biggest Apple geek satisfied. Coming with a brand new super Retina OLED display that stretches to the very edge of the device, the home button has been replaced by an upward swiping motion. Not only that, but Touch ID has also been rendered obsolete and replaced by Face ID. This, somewhat unsurprisingly, uses facial recognition to map your face and use that to unlock your phone. And for those emoji fans (isn’t that really everyone?) Apple has made a brand spanking new feature called Animojo which allowed Apple to create emojis that look like them. Of course, the most exciting moment came when Apple announced that the iPhone X supports wireless charging. Boom.
The only slight challenge with the iPhone X is the price tag, which comes in at $1,000. But, if you are prepared to pay the price it is available in white and space grey with pre-orders beginning on October 27th and shipping on November 3rd – in time for Christmas.
The iPhone X wasn’t the only iPhone to be released. Not quite as pricy as the X, starting at $700. The iPhone 8 boasts super strong glass on the front and back as well as aluminium band that wraps around the edge. Basically, it looks like the iPhone 7 coated in glass. Inside it has an A11 Bionic processor, a Retina HD display as well as some pretty significant improvements to the camera. These include a new 12-megapixel sensor, a new colour fitter as well as new Portrait Lighting mode. For those who aren’t amateur photographers, this means the new camera is more powerful than Apple has produced before. Looking forward, the iPhone also comes prepped for augmented reality applications and has wireless charging, like the iPhone X.
