Apple’s Christmas Advertisement. As we move towards the end of November, there is little escape from the Christmas mania that is slowly taking over….well the world. And Apple HQ is no exception. With the past few months over at Apple having been pretty busy with numerous releases and updates demonstrating that even without Steve Jobs the titans over at Apple are still dedicated to a relentless pursuit of progression, it would make sense that their Christmas campaign would nod to their latest models.
Traditionally, Apple Christmas adverts have featured the full range of Apple products with 2013’s Emmy Award winning ad featuring a boy using his iPhone during a family gathering, only to later show he was editing a movie to show to everyone. Whilst in 2014 Apple showed a granddaughter using the entire range of Apple products to create and mix a duet with her grandmother to create the perfect holiday gift. However, this year Apple has gone for an entirely different campaign.
Taking inspiration from Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, the ad features the iconic monster played by Everybody Loves Raymond actor and comedian Brad Garrett (who is a pretty big star over in the US) living alone on a hill where we see him gently humming along to “there’s no place like home for the holidays” as it plays on a music box, meanwhile he records the tune on his iPhone 7 (interestingly the only Apple product to be featured during the entire ad.) He then dons a top hat and coat and ventures towards the town square where a crowd is signing Christmas carols. In a scene taken straight out of an Old Hollywood Christmas movie, the monster frightens everyone until one blonde, brave youth adjusts his lightbulb and starts singing. And then the whole crowd sings together. The ad ends on a high with the tagline, “open your heart to everyone.”
According to Apple’s Vice President of Marketing, Tor Myhren it is meant to be a “piece of entreatment.” Apple’s Christmas Advertisement That is essentially an exceptionally fancy way of saying that Apple’s ad isn’t really about their products, but based far more on their brand ethos of equality and freedom.
There is really little doubt that this advert is a nod to the current rise in hate crime in America. As we speak, a divided populace is coming to terms with their current President elect. Apple are telling us to love one another – even if “other” is a 7 foot monster who looks like he might crush his iPhone 7 at any moment.
Apple released another ad this week, which similarly calls upon broader ideas, although using them far more explicitly for sales. Focused on the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, which has received mixed reviews since the announcement of its launch earlier this month, it is centred on ideas and inventions. Lasting 1 minute and 37 seconds it shows a series of lightbulbs exploding round the world whilst human inventions flash on the screen – fire, harvesting, woodwork, the Apple MacBook Pro, you get the idea…. It basically is reminding us viewers that Apple is the next step forward in human technology. Actually, it is really rather beautiful – particularly with the background opera soundtrack of William Tell Overture adding some real dynamism to the proceedings. These are the Apple’s Christmas Advertisement.
