Apple sets to take on Spotify with new streaming service. A few weeks ago we mentioned that Apple hopes to get cracking on making original content. However, according to the very latest reports. And we mean it- this information is literally hot of the press shows that Apple is wasting no time at all in making 2017 their year. According to the geek grapevine Apple is planning to create seriously original television content, with plans for this to be available as early as the end of this year.
This comes as no surprise to anyone in the know, rumours of the company setting its sight on Hollywood date all the way back to 2015 and last year Apple was said to be debating buying out Time Warner – a merger that could seriously have affected the future of the entertainment industry. It also bought “Carpool Karaoke” – a TV series that starred James Corden and that quickly gained a viral following with the likes of Lady Gaga and Tim Cook appearing on the extremely popular show. Apple have already ordered 16 episodes of this show, although it’s not clear when this will be released. That’s why Apple sets to take on Spotify with new streaming service.
Interestingly, it would seem that Apple has no plans to take on the likes of Netflix or Amazon Prime. There seems to be no dastardly plans to spend the millions and millions of dollars it would cost to take on these titans. Rather, Apple is focused on creating a select number of high-quality, fantastic shows that would simply give them the edge over Spotify. Think more “the Queen” or “Game of Thrones” rather than the innumerable number of crappy TV shows that end up flooding our Netflix account. This could well prove extremely important for Apple as its hardware sales have significantly slowed down over the last year, so a focus on its service side could well avoid this worrying trajectory. Not only that, but since Tim Cook became CEO Apple have failed to launch a significant new product, with the only exception being the Apple Watch which wasn’t met with the hoped for enthusiasm that many at Apple anticipated. Of course, even if Apple isn’t overtly gunning for Netflix and Amazon Prime, there is little doubt that the honchos over there must be at least a little bit scared. Given the huge swathe of resources boasted by Apple, they could probably get a President elected (hey if it works for Trump…) so competing with these boys should be a breeze.
