Apple releases iOS 11, is there a news cycle in September that doesn’t feature Apple? We somehow doubt it…. a big season for all our creatives and small businesses who suddenly find themselves with revived and rejuvenated customers after a restful summer, Apple – is no exception to the September business frenzy.
Having already announced the release of the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and the Apple Watch 3, they have just released their latest version of iOS…. number 11. However, for those old apps…anything that hasn’t been updated in the past two years, this could prove somewhat problematic. Because all those apps that have been abandoned by their developers will no longer be supported. For those of us who are technology inclined (or geeks as we are more commonly known), this is because iOS 11 will only work with apps that are written in 64 bit-code. This is the number that represents how much data a processor can handle at once. Essentially, the higher the number the quicker a device can work.
By dropping support for 32 bit-software (which was used back in the day a.k.a – 2 years ago), Apple is hoping to make sure its apps can run far more quickly as it no longer needs to allow for software libraries for older programming.
Whilst it is relatively easy for App developers to upgrade their creations to 64-bit if they wish, it has raised a few eyebrows within the tech community because, as a lot of people have pointed out, two years is rather quick for something to become obsolete. We know….people criticising our beloved Apple….heaven offend. Some have even suggested that Apple is trying to force people to move forward, which in our eyes – at Mac Rental company isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but then we are utterly biased.
Beyond the controversy however, iOS 11 also brings with it a range of exciting features that should help sweeten the pot. The control centre has been completely redesigned so that users will be able to view their most used settings when they swipe up and the control centre can be customised. Siri also sounds more like a person and can now translate Chinese, Spanish, French, German or Italian. And for those of you are partial to a bit of Instagram, there are a number of new photo filters. Whilst for our business clients, Apple has introduced a file system of the iPhone and iPad….which is originally called Files.
