Apple & Chicago join forces to create coding courses. There is little doubt that coding is the future, where once every school child had to learn French or Music, now even Primary School students are learning coding as a way of preparing them for the future. Given that coding forms an integral part of future education it is unsurprising that Apple has decided to demonstrate their support. For some time now Apple have been offering coding courses at 60 community colleges as well as 15000 primary schools across the globe. These courses include a whole range of resources that help students learn basic coding and create fully working Apps.
So just in time for Christmas, and as part of their corporate responsibility programme Apple has today announced that it will be joining forces with the city of Chicago to provide nearly 500,000 students with access to coding courses as part of Apple’s “Everyone Can Code,” program. Their most impressive programme to date, it will aim to target 450,000 students.
An impressive coalition between the Mayor’s Office of Chicago, Chicago Public Schools as well as City Colleges of Chicago and some non for profit organisations, they want to help school children from underprivileged backgrounds to improve their levels of employability. By learning Swift, Apple’s cleverly created and easy to learn programming language – it should absolutely help them to get better jobs. Offered at the City Colleges of Chicago as well as through Swift Coding Clubs (after school clubs at schools), those who complete the programme will have the opportunity to intern with some local businesses who are offering 100 places to local graduates.
The programme comes in the wake of Apple’s first vice president of inclusion and diversity, Denise Young Smith leaving Apple following some pretty controversial comments over diversity at Apple.
However, this is not the first foray into social responsibility by Apple. Since Tim Cook took the helm, Apple has been increasingly committed to helping the world be a better place. Everyone now….aww.
This means that since 2014, all of Apple’s activities in America have come from renewable energy with that statistic dropping only slightly to 87% outside of the states. Meanwhile, the Mac Mini computer is the world’s most energy efficient computer.
In fact, in 2012 (the most recent date we have for Apple’s charity giving) the company gave $50 million dollars to Stanford University hospitals, with the same amount being given to African aid organisation (Product)RED. And with the release of Apple Pay, Apple supported Instant Donations to Nonprofits, making it far easier for Apple consumers to make charitable donations.
