Apple has announced its interest in investing in a project that would restore and protect the mangroves across a 27,000-acre forest in Colombia, as part of a broader effort by the company to achieve carbon neutrality because Apple announces Investment in Forest Restoration in colombia.
Apple’s VP of environment, policy, and social initiatives, Lisa Jackson who made the announcement last week at the 2018 Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco said the company would be undertaken the project in partnership with non-profit Conservation International.
The project will see Apple work to protect and restore mangroves in a 27,000-acre forest along the coastline of Colombia. According to Jackson, investing in the forest is critical because they are nature’s most important tools in the battle against climate change.
Speaking further, Jackson said Apple is totally committed to the sustenance of clean energy, and there is no conflict between a healthy planet and a healthy bottom line.
Responding, CEO of Conservation International, M. Sanjayan, the partnering firm said putting an end to the destruction of the mangroves is the biggest way to combat climate change.
According to him, Mangrove trees have the densest carbon storage of any habitat on Earth. Therefore the first step to changing the thermostat of the world is by ending the destruction of mangroves and restoring them.
The project will also involve tree-planting and preservation in degraded areas of the Colombian forest and tree preservation. Doing this Apple hopes will help capture an estimated one million metric tons of CO2 emissions over its lifetime.
Earlier in 2015, Apple also partnered with the Conservation Fund to acquire 36,000 acres of the forest in Maine and California, ensuring the preservation and maintenance of the forests supply of raw materials for paper.
